Amazon’s foray into the fashion industry began way back in 2002 but in recent years it seems the behemoth online retailer has been getting more serious about apparel. It’s made several acquisitions but the big delta for the company will be ramping up its private label offerings and shaping its image into one that is more cool and trendy. Part of that strategy is better photography and better video. To that end, Amazon tapped Torafu Architects to create what is being called the company’s largest photo studio in the world.
Amazon’s new photo studio opened 2 months ago in March. Located by the water in Shinagawa and built from a renovated distribution warehouse, all 4 floors make up a vast space with an area of 7500 square meters (80730 sq ft). “The design capitalizes on the potential and sense of scale of the existing space,” says Torafu Architects.
The 1st floor is is the entrance, lounge, conference room, editorial studio, and library spaces. The 2nd floor serves as an office for full-time staff. On the 3rd floor there are 11 photography studios (separated by curtains) and 5 video studios. The company plans to shoot over 1 million photos and videos here each year.
