Tokyo-based artist Ogino Yuna creates semi-abstract paintings using motifs of living things that are familiar to her, such as flowers and people. But for her latest exhibition, which just opened in Tokyo, the artist has pointed her brush at one of the most basic yet intimate human connections: the embrace.
“Embrace is a series of portraits that I began in 2021,” explains the artist. “This series intentionally avoids specifying gender, depicting scenes of human connection.” Through bold colors and brushstrokes, combined with dynamic textures, the physical and emotional relationship between humans emerges. Tones move back and forth in strokes to build up a vast area, which expresses weight, volume and eroticism.
“Embrace” is on view at Roppongi Hills A/D Gallery, which is on the 3rd floor in the Roppongi Hills West Walk area. The show is on view through September 1, 2024.
Yuna Ogino was born in Tokyo in 1982 and obtained her MFA from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2007. You can keep up with her on Instagram.
