Founded in 2007, Spoon & Tamago is an independent online platform dedicated to Japanese art, design & culture. The Spoon & Tamago membership program is way for us to work together with you – our readers – to continue to support Japanese arts and crafts. Over the years we’ve explored various revenue models and have come to the conclusion that a reader-supported model is the future of independent publishing.

We hope you will consider becoming a member at one of the tiers below, and continue with us on this path we set out to preserve, commemorate and raise up Japanese art & design.

Waving at you,
team spoon & tamago

What You Get When You Become a Spoon & Tamago Member

All membership levels include the following benefits & perks.

  • 72 Seasons Newsletter
Our new 72 Seasons Newsletter follows Japan’s ancient calendar of 72 microseasons. Around every 5 days you’ll receive a new microseason in your inbox, describing the subtle yet special changes that are constantly occurring all around us. We also use the microseason to reflect upon a piece of Japanese artwork and share a food or recipe based on the corresponding seasonal food. Think of it as a quick Japanese class, art class and a cooking class all in one!
  • Members-only Content
    • Studio Visits – art collectors love our studio visits! Deep, personal dives into the creative spaces where artwork comes to life. We’ve interviewed many of Japan’s greatest artists, before they became household names.
    • Quarterly Features – longer-form articles that focus on specific topics like Mt. Fuji and Japanese trains.
    • Residency Program – a portion of your membership will be earmarked towards supporting an annual initiative to bring one Japanese artist from Japan to New York for a residency and exhibition, which members will receive updates on.
    • Periodical artist talks and lectures on various aspects of Japanese arts & crafts.
  • Shop Discounts and Special Offers
Members will receive advance notice on all new products coming to the shop and rotating discounts on select products. Members will also receive special discounts ahead of certain holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day.
  • Ad-free Reading Experience
Active members will not see banner advertising on Spoon & Tamago when logged into their account.

Lifetime Tamago members will receive this exclusive S&T tote bag
(you’ll be able to choose which design you prefer)

Why does Spoon & Tamago have a membership program?Over the past years we’ve experimented with various forms of revenue to support our platform but we’ve come to believe that member-supported publishing is one of the most authentic means of doing so, and is a way for Spoon & Tamago to develop deeper relationships with its readers while supporting a common cause.
So, you’re putting up a paywall? No. It’s vitally important to us that the majority of our content remains free for all to access. This includes our daily blog posts, weekly newsletter and all social media posts. A select portion of content outlined above will be dedicated to members. It’s simply another way for readers to support Spoon & Tamago.
How easy is it to cancel my membership?Super-easy. You can access your account here to make any changes you want such as upgrading or canceling your membership. You’ll receive an email reminder several days in advance of any recurring payments and cancellations take just a few moments of your time.
What systems do you use to handle all this. Is it safe? Memberships are managed and processed securely by Memberful with Stripe as a payment processor. This website is securely hosted by WordPress and email newsletters are distributed by Mailchimp.
What is your must-have summer accessory? That would have to be this leather watermelon bag hand-made by Tsuchiya Kaban.
