Azabudai Hills looks amazing! The new development,

Azabudai Hills looks amazing! The new development, which includes Japan's tallest skyscraper, opened yesterday. We love all the green spaces and how landscaping was such a central part of the project, which includes a hotel, international school, offices, residences and retail shops.

Art is also central to the project, with sculptures by Yoshitomo Nara and exhibitions by Olafur Eliasson and TeamLab.

Japanese artist @lito_leafart has been living with

Japanese artist @lito_leafart has been living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) his entire life. Lito had been searching for an outlet where he could channel his above-normal levels of concentration and hyper focus when he discovered the Japanese art of kirie (切り絵, literally ‘cut picture’).

Several years ago he began experimenting, not with paper, but with leaves, which turned out to be an ideal medium as their decomposing nature forced him to work quickly.

Over time he got faster and his daily creations, which he began posting to social media, became more intricate.

If you would like to see the artist’s work up-close, he’s having an exhibition at @daimarukobe department store from 11/30 – 12/11/2023 where you can even purchase select works.

2023 felt like a turning point for Japan. After several years of covid-induced seclusion, tourism rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. It truly felt like Japan was *the* place to be this year.

With that in mind, we put together this year’s gift guide for everyone who took an interest in Japan, whether vicariously or through travel. With an emphasis on craftsmanship and quality, we’ve curated a list of items that are both functional but also serve as an extension of learning about Japan and its culture.

Yuho Tanaka (田中幽峰) was an accomplished art

Yuho Tanaka (田中幽峰) was an accomplished artist and draughtsman active in Kyoto during the late-1800s. At the height of his career in the 1890s he created numerous graphic patterns inspired by butterflies that were eventually compiled into a book titled hyaku-cho-zuan, or One Hundred Butterfly Designs.

And thanks to Japan’s National Diet Library (NDL), all of Tanaka’s images have been made available copyright-free, and for use both for individual and commercial purposes.

Fans of “Kiki’s Delivery Service” will be delighted to learn that a new museum dedicated to children’s book author Eiko Kadono will open in Tokyo.

Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the three-story Kiki’s Museum of Literature will be located inside Nagisa Park, which is situated in the Edogawa district of Tokyo, known as the author’s home.
