In 2014, a subculture emerged in Japan called jimi halloween (地味ハロウィン), or “mundane Halloween.” It was started by a group of adults at Daily Portal Z who “kind of wanted to participate in the festivities of Halloween, but were too embarrassed to go all out in witch or zombie costumes.” So instead of the flashy and flamboyant costumes they had been seeing gain popularity in Japan, they decided to dress up in mundane, everyday costumes. The type of costumes that you have to explain to people and then they say, ooooh I get it.
Here are some notable mundane Halloween costumes from this year’s event.

In Australia Halloween is only recently gaining some popularity thanks (most probably) almost entirely to commercial enterprises insisting on promoting & selling Halloween goods. The kids love it so, well, parents give in. We grumble that it’s not an Australian cultural celebration but… Any way my point is many of us don’t have inviolable rules about what a Halloween costume should be, nor care enough, therefore these Japanese “costumes” & the “jimi Halloween” concept are HILARIOUS. My British brother-in-law sent this to me bcoz he thought it was hilarious too. I love the guy in pyjamas who saw a roach & woman taking out trash! Hon. mention: Guy about to win at ‘old maid’. ha ha ha ha…..

So funny, and truly inspiring. I’ve never liked wearing typical Halloween costumes, even ones that are not monstrous. This opens up an infinite range of possibilities.

These are great! Here in San Francisco Halloween is an event for all ages and these are excellent ideas for adults who didn’t plan an elaborate costume, or for someone who planned something light two weeks ago when the nights were much warmer and now needs to add a parka (happens every year).
I laughed for all of them but especially liked the glasses and hot beverage combo. It reminded me of a December visit when the weather was cold and everyone walking into a museum I was visiting had their glasses fog the moment they stepped inside. Good times!

This is why the Japanese are the best. Moderate subversity, maximum humour.
