Stories about the collapse of civilization and ord

Stories about the collapse of civilization and order—apocalyptic stories—endlessly seduce us. As terrifying as the real thing would surely be, we love imagining our world destroyed.

Today on the blog we’re talking about Japanese illustrator Tokyo Genso, who excels at painting that picture for us. He creates lush CG illustrations of notable Tokyo landmarks that are in ruins and, in many cases, have been reclaimed by nature.

His work will be on display at @ginza_tsutayabooks from 6/3/2023 to 7/2.

These round, blue traffic signs are ubiquitous in Japan. Yet their instructions are hardly standard. Gaku Yamazaki, a 21-year old college senior, spends his spare time traversing Japan in search of what he has dubbed ikei-yajirushi, or ‘unusual arrows.’

There are thousands of these abnormal road signs dotted across Japan and while drivers might find them confusing or even annoying, Yamazaki has developed a certain affection for them, particularly towards the more bizarre ones.

Today on the blog we’re talking about ceramicist Eriko Inazaki, who recently won the @loewefoundation Craft Prize.

The artist’s captivating sculptures are made by intricately rolling and pinching tiny pieces of clay, adhering them to each other to create organic, biological structures. The multiple layers are rare in works of ceramics, and create a sense of anxiety and fragility.

This lush rooftop forest just opened at Dazaifu Te

This lush rooftop forest just opened at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka.

One of Japan’s most-historically and culturally significant shrines, the main hall will undergo a massive renovation beginning in May of 2023. And for three years the honden main hall will be completely closed off to the roughly 10 million visitors who come to the shrine each year.

So plans were made to create a temporary hall of worship and it was architect Sou Fujimoto who was selected for his use of blending nature with architecture.

From July 6 - October 22, Japan House London will

From July 6 - October 22, Japan House London will be hosting an exhibition of graphic arts featuring a diverse lineup of 60 Japanese artists.

Variety and anarchy are ever-present in the exhibition, with Jenny Kaori’s bold, punky depictions of girlhood juxtaposed against AC-bu’s surreal and comedic portraiture.

It’s a rare opportunity to experience the diversity of Japanese illustration and graphic arts in one place outside Japan.

Happy kodomo-no-hi 🎏

Around this time of year, Japan becomes decorated with scenes of fish fluttering in the sky. Known as koinobori, the carp streamers are an important celebration of Children’s Day, which is on May 5th, and is one of the consecutive holidays that makes up Golden Week in Japan. But one of our favorite forms of the celebration happens at Sabogawa River, which plays host to an unusual yet exquisite tradition. Colorful koinobori, which usually flutter in the wind, are placed back into the river where they belong.

Rail worker strikes were common in 1960s Japan, particularly in April because that was when wage negotiations (known as 春闘; shunto) would go sour.

People would wake up early to tune into the news to find out if they would be walking to work or school.

A few years ago, 78-year old illustrator Masami Oh

A few years ago, 78-year old illustrator Masami Ohnishi created these ultra-realistic renderings of Japanese maintenance trains.

But most people have never seen these trains before because they’re part of an unseen workforce of night crawlers that only operate after regular service has ended.

They’re the unsung heroes: part of the reason why Japanese trains are renowned for their punctuality, comfort and overall reliability.

And does all this maintenance actually work? Well, if you look at the data published by the Japan Transport Safety Board, Japan’s railways have a remarkably low rate of derailments. In 2022 there were just 5 derailments across the entire country.

Just for reference the U.S. (according to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics) had 1044 derailments in 2022.

① The “Rail Grinding Carriage” which detects and smooths out abrasions at the micrometer level

② The “Electric Inspection Carriage” has a pantograph mounted on the roof just like other trains. But this one inspects the height, voltage and conditions of overhead electric lines.

③ The “Electric Locomotive E5000 Model” tows different train lines into the inspection unit for maintenance. Because certain train lines operate differently, they’re unable to drive themselves into the inspection unit.
