The global pandemic has hit the pause button on life. Everything that brought us together—art shows and festivals to trade shows and symposiums—have all been cancelled. But memorializing these events and re-contextualizing them as a city’s collective urban memory is Yuriko Yagi and Kazumasa Takada, the duo behind the architectural design studio PAN- PROJECTS.

In a project titled The Matter of Facts, the duo repurpose brochures and other printed matter as building materials, which they’ve installed above the 1st floor reception desk of The National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT). The printed material are from cancelled and postponed events and other activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Yagi and Takada’s architectural practice focuses on the unique culture and history of a given place, and by placing value on the intricately entangled elements they find in these places, they attempt to create harmony. “The work,” they say, referring to the installation at NACT, “consisting of a large quantity of accumulated printed matter serves both as a means of communicating facts and preserving traces.” It’s on display through December 20, 2021.
