For years the hip Ace Hotel, with locations in cities like New York and Portland, has been a favorite for Japanese tourists. Now, Japan is getting their own Ace Hotel, the first in Asia, that will open in Kyoto in late 2019.

By partnering with real estate firm NTT Urban Development, The Ace Hotel Kyoto will open within Shimpukan, Kyoto’s oldest shopping mall that closed last year. Original and historic, the building was constructed in 1926 and housed the Kyoto Central Telephone Office. As part of a redevelopment project, architect Kengo Kuma will blend new with old, incorporating renovations of the historic building that will house retail shops along with the hotel.

“It’s been our long-standing dream to put down roots in Japan,” said Ace Hotel President Brad Wilson, who has always admired Japanese culture and craftsmanship. In the past the group has collaborated from afar with Japanese artists and brands like BEAMS, Porter, Isetan, Kenzo Minami, Hender Scheme and Traveler’s Company, to name a few.

the renovated Shinpukan building will be 7 floors high with 2 basement levels. The hotel will have over 200 rooms.
