Two months after the devastating earthquake and tsunami – on May 16, 2011, Google launched “Mirai e no kioku” (Memories for the Future) to help rediscover lost memories of homes and towns by allowing people across Japan to upload and share their photos and videos that did survive.

Yesterday, Google announced their latest initiative as part of the site: thousands of miles of Street View imagery in the affected areas that were collected before and after the disaster. The images of the devastated buildings are powerful, but so are the before-and-after street views. Have a look for yourself and explore.
