Ten high profile Japanese architects are currently participating in an exhibition at architekturzentrum wien (architecture museum vienna) titled JapanLisztRaiding.
The most eye-catching piece for me was Kengo Kuma’s mit Cube #6, which utilized a translucent concrete known as LUCCON. Straight from the company’s website: “LUCCON translucent concrete is manufactured in large volume top layer concrete blocks with embedded webbed fiber optic cables, making the stone appear comparably massive as well as transparent.”

Commisioned by Roland Hagenberg, an Austrian writer, photographer and film maker now based in Tokyo, who has, on more than one occasion, documented the work of Japanese architecture in film and text, asked the architects to propose temporary dwellings for the village of Raiding, Austria. Also known as the birth place of composer Franz Liszt, the exhibition is an exploration into the challenges and contradictions in a modern “non-city.”
The show, which runs through September 29th, features the following architects: SANAA(Kazuyo SEJIMA / Ryue NISHIZAWA), Jun AOKI, Terunobu FUJIMORI, Sou FUJIMOTO, Hiroshi HARA, Toyo ITO, KDa (Astrid Klein / Mark Dytham), TEZUKA Architects, and Yasuhiro YAMASHITA.
