Kyoto-based artist Tomona Matsukawa creates realistic and somewhat dramatic oil paintings that are each inspired by conversations with other women of her generation, often strangers. The artist imbues her work with arresting narratives, both in the form of subject matter, as well as title, which are both derived from striking phrases or memorable moments during the conversation.

With skilled realism and a mastery of dramatic light and reflection, Matsukawa invites viewers in to wonder and reconstruct their own narrative based on these single fragments of everyday life. Themes of vulnerability and interiority of human beings abound in her works as the artist reconstructs these small moments onto the smooth and flat surfaces of her canvas.
Matsukawa will be participating in a residency program this spring in Paris, which will culminate in a solo exhibition at the contemporary art gallery Ceysson & Bénétière (May 16th to June 29th, 2024). You can also keep up with the artist’s work on Instagram.
