What would it be like to view the world as a dewdrop on a leaf, or a droplet of water from a faucet? That’s the idea behind a new surrealist short film shot using an iPhone. The dreamy, watery state was achieved by just that: water. The team used a drop of water inside the hole of a 5 yen coin, held in place by surface tension, and affixing the coin over the camera lens.

“Water lenses are fragile: they tremble in the wind, break by the touch of a finger,” says Japanese designer Dan Tomimatsu, who’s film project was based on a poem by poet fukudapero. And that was exactly the type of surreal imagery they were going for. But who knew it could be achieved by such simple means? The 5-minute film “O” – eau- is narrated in Japanese but is subtitled in English.
