Nakanoshima Children’s Book Forest by Tadao Ando

Yesterday, in Osaka, a new library opened. Designed specifically for children, the space is filled, wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, with outward-facing books. This is Nakanoshima Children’s Book Forrest.

The building was designed and built by architect Tadao Ando, who then donated it to the city to be utilized by children of all ages. Admission is free, but you must reserve your spot in advance.

“Here, you are going to find a lot of books that you’ve never seen before,” says the library, speaking specifically to kids. “Not just picture books, but reference books,children’s stories, cooking books, art books, photo books,
and books in other languages, too!” Here, in this space with walls covered with books, children are invited to explore new worlds.

The books on the higher shelves serve a decorative purpose but can be accessed by seeking assistance from the library staff.

The ‘book forest’ was supposed to open yesterday–March 1, 2020–but unfortunately had to be postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. But parents can expect the library to re-open in the near future.

UPDATE: the library will officially open on July 5, 2020.
