Shishi-Iwa House is a 10-room boutique resort in Karuizawa that recently opened its doors for business. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and tucked away in a secluded setting, the resort is “a restorative retreat that reinforces the relationship between nature, architecture and human connection.”
Uniquely designed, the two-story retreat is crafted with an organic, curvilinear form that undulates with the movement of the forest. Inside, those who are familiar with the Ban’s signature cardboard tube structures will find hints of his craft throughout the space.
One of the goals of the architect was to preserve as many existing trees on the property as possible. “Blending the interior and exterior spaces, we created unique openings in the guest rooms and social areas to allow best views of the garden and encourage outdoor access,” said Ban.
Rates vary by season and room but the online listing indicates that prices range between 33,000 yen and 44,000 yen per room (for 2 people).
