Music Monday: Kenshi Yonezu

In Japan, a country whose music scene is dominated by boy and girl groups whose producers churn out hit after hit like a factory, Kenshi Yonezu is somewhat of a rare breed. Born out of the Internet, Yonezu got his start uploading tracks to Japanese online video-sharing site Nico Nico Douga using his pseudonym Hachi (ハチ).

His single “Lemon” was released in March of 2018 and was the soundtrack for the TV series “unnatural”

Now at age 27 he’s signed to major record label Sony Music and his credits not only include singer and songwriter but often also mixer, choreographer, illustrator and videographer. There should be some rule that says one person can never be that talented but unfortunately that’s not the case with Yonezu, who even does a lot of his own album cover art.

If there’s anyone who seems willing and able to usher mainstream J-pop into the next generation, it’s Yonezu.

his latest sing;e “Flamingo” was released in October of 2018

Like what you hear? You can find more of his music on YouTube. Kenshi Yonezu is also on Twitter and Instagram. And be sure to check out our other Music Monday picks.

  1. he’s a wonderful artist and i’m so glad that you’ve taken the time to spread the word about him!
one thing though, his name is kenshi, instead of kenshin.

  2. I would also like to highlight some of his past work under “Hachi” while he was still uploading his works on niconicodouga, such as マトリョシカ (Matryoshka) and ドーナツホール (Donut Hole). A true talent even before getting signed onto any label.
