Augmented reality (AR), simply put, is an interactive experience where computer-generated images enhance real-world environments. Japanese motion graphics artist Keisuke Terashima has utilized the technology to developed one of the more practical uses of AR that we’ve seen recently.
Terashima developed a script that you can download to your iphone, which creates a virtual ruler so that you can visualize safe social distancing. The ruler and its increments move with you so can constantly keep a safe distance between you and others when making essential trips to the supermarket or drugstore.
You’ll need an iPhone and the latest OS but to open the the ruler, paste this link into a Safari browser. Then, tap the download button, followed by the icon on the top right corner. Finally, tap the file and it should open.

I don’t see why this would be a good use of AR. Social distancing is having a detrimental effect on the mental health of a lot of people. I cannot see how adding this level of precision to it will do anything but exacerbate its effects. When this is over we need to find ways to heal people mentally. I don’t see this being any help now of after the pandemic.

I think it’s amazing! A clever application for a topical need. And when this is over, most folks will snap back to the way we were (which, until a vaccine is developed, is of concern)… we’re social animals in general, and based on everyone I know, are all eager to hug and connect physically with our loved ones… and, as Abre states, some of us will need extra help and healing ☮️
