Dad spends 7 years on incredibly detailed maze

Some people have hobbies. Other people are obsessive. But when the two cross paths, this is what you get. Japanese twitter user @Kya7y recently unearthed an incredibly detailed maze that her father created almost 30 years ago. When pressed for details, the father explained that he spent 7 years creating the map on A1 size paper, which is about 33 x 23 inches.

Unsure what to do with the discovery, @Kya7y reached out on twitter but was quickly inundated with requests to receive copies. I wonder how long it would take to finish the maze?

[Update] People have been asking @Kya7y about her father. Everyone seems to want to know more about the man behind this amazing maze. This morning she wrote, “Where does my father work? At a public university!! In the athletic department!!! As a janitor.”

[Update 2] The maze is currently available in our shop ($43). We also began carrying version 2.0 ($35).

  16. Beautiful! As many have said already, it should be in a high quality form and for sale (if the artist even wants any money for it)! Available for as many as possible e.g., pay as much you want with a minimum limit. People would gladly pay something for it!

  17. And, my son, now 28, was drawing mazes like this as a young child, one of which was approx. 6 ft x 6ft and hung up in his elementary school when he was in 2nd grade. He added “icons” that if you went on that route you’d “acquire” them and they could be used to combat something later in the maze. He was sort of drawing video games at age 6 or 7 in 1990 or so. He also helped the computer teacher with the other kids, and he was programming in elementary fractals while the others were learning how to make a turtle move up and down on the screen. Now, at 28? He’s an innovative business programming whiz!! And, I’m the proud mom!!

  40. OK, 180 or so messages of “yes please” from people. Is there any indication that a print will become available. I’ve checked out this girls twitter and my japanese/chinese (whatever) is performing at -30% capacity. i.e. I can’t read it. Has she said anything further about this image ? Cheers.

  41. Thanks for all the overwhelming interest. We’ve been in touch with the author and she is working to try to make copies available for purchase at the summer comic book convention (August) in Japan.

Assuming this happens, we’ll try and work with the author to make copies available abroad as well, at which point we’ll reach out to everyone who left a comment.

After 30 days you won’t be able to comment on this post (spam prevention measure) so I suggest you sign up for our newsletter, located towards the top of this page.
